Can't transfer music with a clean install

I chose to do a clean install of my ibook, however now I'm having difficulty getting the ipod to sync with the new OS. "Disk failed to be read or written to..."

Any fixes. Though the artists are listed on the pod, when I click on them they are blank. However, they the music is still on the book.
Any ideas?
