Difficulty using external Mike with iTalk

The iTalk attachment supposedly enables one to use an external microphone. However, I have tried making recordings with two different (high quality) mikes, and get results that are barely audible. The recordings with the built-in mike are fine, so the device does work. Does anyone have any experience/theories/suggestions on how to successfully use an external mike?
