is there a reason why the new iPod [video] can't be boot from USB? Does OS X / Open Firmware not allow USB to be used for boot up?

for instance: I would like to install OS X on the iPod [video] to boot off of it for diagnostic reasons when I go to clients' homes.

thanks

Apple does not support Mac USB booting, at least not very well. There was an obscure release note about USB booting functioning, but that was a long time ago (perhaps as far back as Jagular). I think USB 1.1 booting may have been devised but Apple never got around to making USB 2 a bootable interface. There was a thread that touched on this subject a few weeks back. Interestingly, there was an early report claiming Mactels are bootable off Firewire but not USB, although I have not seen that confirmed elsewhere.

It's a pity Apple abandoned Firewire on the iPod.

since it's an apple limitation ... can you boot an iPod with Windows installed off USB on a PC?

Apple should really bring back firewire. If they don't, it will probably be the last one I buy.

I tried using the USB 2.0 version...
