Has anyone installed one of the 80Gb Toshiba MK8007GAH *80Gb* drives into an iPod?

[crazy long link:]

[shorter link - then go to '1.8 inch drives' and '80Gb'}:

It would be super cool to have 80Gb capacity - seems like it would work just fine, doncha think?

i've heard there are locks in the firmware to keep you from being able to do something like this, anyone have confirmation on that?

I was thinking there might be, kind of like how Microdrives in the iPod Minis (at least when they first came out) couldn't be used in digital cameras (Minis were a lot cheaper than the standalone drives).

There are no locks in the firmware to prevent this. Swapping the hard drive is actually easier than replacing the battery which is also pretty easy in every iPod bar the mini.

You need to run iPod upadater after you install the new drive & it will sort out the partitioning of your new drive
