Alright. I didn't see a problem identical to the one that I'm having anywhere else on your site. If you've already covered this problem, plz don't shoot me.
Anyway, my iPod crashed in the middle of changing songs (All Things Come to Pass by Sixty Watt Shaman). It stayed frozen, displaying the time 9:50 PM my entire walk home (which took like twenty minutes) and that same song. I finally remember to 'Reboot', which just makes things worse.
Ever since that reboot, it won't go past that wonderful sad-looking iPod screen. I've connected it to a computer, and it will only detect the iPod as a 'USB Hard Disk Device', and won't detect in iTunes. I've used apple's 'Troubleshooting Guide', but all to no avail. Do you guys have any further insight, or has my iPod finally gone to that big scrapheap in the sky?

Strange enough i just had almost the same problem happen to me on Yesterday !!
Can't get passed the happy face screen, nothing happens after i a try resetting and when plugged into my PB nothing happens Also hear a clicking sound like the HD is trying to boot up but can't . I think my HD is bust ?
I got my Video iPod 30GB for xmas and can't believe this has happened. My GF still has the receipt from ordering it online from apple UK.
Surely they will offer a fix or replacement as it should be covered by a years manufacturer warranty ?
My iPod also has my name engraved on the back, they would have to replace that also, unless they use the old back ?
I'll let you know my progress

Same thing happened to my video a few weeks ago.
http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
That's where you need to go. Sign up for that and they'll ship you an empty box for you to send your broken ipod in. After a week or so, they'll send you back a brand new iPod. All free, as it is covered under warranty.
Another option would be going into the GB at an Apple store, as my brother did with his nano.
I perfer the latter, as it's faster, but you may not have an Apple Store near you.

Mine isn't a video or anything. And my hard drive doesn't really do that 'clicking' thing, though....I've only had my iPod since August, and I can't imagine why it would already be going belly up, considering the great cost one pays to own one. Either way, I hope that somebody can give me some further insight...and if not, well, I guess I'll hafta see about getting it in to be fixed...

Try to plug it into your computer and run the iPod Updater. If there's something you can correct going on, the Updater will probably fix it. If the Updater doesn't see it, try charging it with an AC adapter...I was ready to put my son's iPod in the box to go back to Apple when, after a LONG AC charge and plenty of waiting, it finally came back on, intact and working perfectly.
By the way, iPods generally don't seem to like being run down all the way...they get stupid and rude and act like they're broken.

Also, if it still won't work after charging, try forcing it into disk mode (I believe it should be Enter+menu to reset, followed immediately when it reboots by Enter+play on your iPod - the exact combination varies among models). Try this several times.
We've resurrected a couple of supposedly dead iPods that way.

You'll know it's rebooting when you see the dark Apple logo. Watch for that and be ready to press the keys THEN. Timing is important here.
