The last time I tried to eject my iPod it froze the system, so I did a hard restart. Both iPod and iBook have both since worked fine, but I plug my iPod into the computer tonight for the first time since then, and while the iPod says it's charging, it doesn't effect the computer (i.e. the icon doesn't show in the Finder and iTunes doesn't open).
Opening iTunes myself makes no difference, Disk Utility doesn't see it and under FireWire in System Profiler I am simply told 'maximum speed 400mbps', no mention of something being plugged in and charging.
Any ideas? I can't even reset the iPod if the computer doesn't even see it! Am I stuck with an un-update-able iPod?
Specs: iBook 500 G3, 80GB 640MB
iPod 3G 20GB

any other firewire stuff connected...and showing up in system profiler?
try unplugging the ipod cable from the mac, try another restart.
firewire on my mac gets cranky sometimes, and a restart (and replugging) helps.

It looks like ever since Apple released the new iPod updater a ton of people have had the same problem....Like me.
My iBook G4 doesn't mount my iPod...nor does iTunes recongnize it anymore. This problem only happened after I installed the new updater.
I even uninstalled and reinstalled both iTunes and the updater.
Check out this thread on the Apple support site.

Yes this is just a plain fact. MY ipod charges when connected to the PowerMac G4 with the firewire cable but the desktop and itunes don't see it anymore.
I see as with everyone else on this problem I have updated to the latest OS X and the latest ipod software and alas we are all screwed until there is an update...of course how will we get the update into our ipods????
So I called tech support and wasted over an hour with a guy who was telling me my ipod was broken and to send it in for repair or replace it. WE all need to let mac know that each passing day we are without our DRIVE they are costing us and it is there fault.
All best,
Rob

Just got off the phone with amazing tech support guy at www.ipodresq.com -
He talked me through this without having to send in my ipod. AMAZING.
(This is a second hand description. Evaluate it and try it at your own risk).
So disconnet your ipod. Quit Itunes.
Go to your utilities folder and look for ipod updater.
Inside you'll see a folder IPOD SOFTWARE UPDATER and DISK UTILITY.
Open DISK UTILITY AND the most recent updater IPOD UPDATER 2006-01-10.
Reset your ipod by holding down the menu key and the center key together until an apple logo appears. Plug in your ipod.
Ideally you will see it in disk utilities. In the ipod updater go ahead and hit RESTORE. Yes this will wipe your ipod of all data but hopefully most of it is in itunes or on your computer.
When updater is done HIT CANCEL and then quit updater and quit disk utilities. It should be on your desktop.
Just to be safe disconnect your ipod and reconnect it. (superstition).
Launch itunes. It may attempt to update your entire itunes library. Mine said there was not enough room so I just hit cancel.
Then I couldn't drag anything to the ipod because the ipod options were set to automatically update and I had to change it to manually update. Now I am relouding my librarys to my ipod which is working with my computer again.
WHY I should have to deal with calling apple and being told my ipod needed to be sent in to be repaired is beyond me. Love this companies products but wish they would step up more on support.
Good luck.
All best,
Rob

has anyone been able to solve this problem without wiping their ipod clean? Is Apple doing anything about this problem?

i just got a new ibook g4 and all 12gb of my music is on my ipod, nowhere else, so i'm not about to do anything that would require restoring it until that music is safely on my ibook's hard drive. any other ideas on how i might get this working again? it seems like it's very spotty, every once in a while i can get the computer to recognize it...but 99/100 times the ibook won't see it.
