What app -- preferably free -- should I use to copy files from a Windows iPod to OSX? My wife's Windows laptop just bit the dust and she has several thousand songs on her iPod she doesn't want to lose. I would like to copy over the files to my Mac and back them up.

I would use a free App called "iPodDisk". It's a very smart utility because it actually mounts a virtual disk of your iPod and all the contents on it. It sorts your music in folders as Playlists, Artists and even Genre. Check it out.
