So, for $59, I get a replaced battery or a new iPod? Can I do it at a brick & mortar store?

What are the rules regarding how bad the battery has to be? My biggest complaint is that the idle time has gone down to nothing (charge it fully, wait 3 days, battery is dead). Playback time is still around 2-3 hours, which isn't great, but it is functional.

I just sent my 4G 20 gig ipod in for the Apple battery service. A few things: 1. The final price for the battery exchange is more like $80 bec. you pay for shipping to and from apple. The apple store i went to said that they do not have replacement ipods in inventory, they just ship the ipods back to apple's elk grove facility so it is no faster than shipping it yourself. i didnt ask but the store might pick up the shipping to and from apple but i'm not sure. 2. i had my "new" ipod back to me in 6 days, which includes the 2 days to get to apple and apple shipped it back to me overnight/saturday delivery 3. the posts i have read all state that in most cases you will not be getting the same ipod back, you get a renewed ipod (same model), which is virtually indistinguishable from a new one. it even came in a dont steal music wrapper- looks like new. if you have a limited edition u2 ipod you may get the same ipod back

i've done battery changes on my own on a 2G ipod but my 4G was suffering other issues that i am not sure are battery related or not so i sent it in for the battery service and i am basically getting a refreshed ipod so hopefully my problems will disappear. the thing about doing it yourself is that your diagnosis may be wrong and a new battery may not fix your problems. it probably will, but you never know why the charge is almost nothing. at least if you send it in to apple you'll get a different ipod.

unless you're worried about voiding your warranty, you can do it yourself for a heck of a lot cheaper than $80...google it, or froogle it for that matter
