Our library recently began a program under which patrons can download audiobooks for use on an mp3 player. Of course, there's a catch -- you can't use an ipod! That's because of Apple's encryption program, which is specific to the ipod, according to the librarian.

I have not yet messed around with this. I'm just wondering if anyone has run across this (probably have -- the program is via "recorded books," so I'm sure other libraries across the country are participating). And more importantly, anyone have a way around the "no ipod" restriction, via some third-party software, perhaps? The library suggested just getting a cheap mp3 player for this program, and I might go that route eventually -- say, for my birthdaty. But that's 3 months away. But I'm looking for a workaround now. There's a book I want to listen to that our library doesn't have yet...

What format are the files in? Remember, Apple's ipods play Audible books just fine.

Well, here's problem No. 1, I just found on the web site:

"eAudiobooks can be downloaded or played on any desktop, laptop or portable device supporting Microsoft Windows Media Player v9 and above, Musicmatch Jukebox v8.2 and above, or Nullsoft Winamp v5 and above. You can also transfer your favorite titles to a wide range of portable devices, including portable music players, portable media centers, Pocket PCs, and even select smartphone devices."

So, I'm thinking I have a problem right from the start. This non-compatibility with non-Windows users if very annoying.
