I have a 4th gen ipod that is giving me a error upon boot up, and through the diag. mode I've determined its the HD is messed up.
Should I send it to apple? Or can I get a HD off the net for cheaper? How much will it cost from apple? what would you do?

How old is the iPod? If it is less than a year, then you could just send it in and have it fixed for free through warranty.

No unfortunately its more than a year I believe. I can't find the receipt but I'm almost positive its about 14 months or so...
Really pisses me off, really a huge turn off to HD based music players in general.

Don't send it in...they'll charge $250 for a HD replacement. You would be better off either fixing it yourself or replacing it.
