Read the instructions that came with the iPod and install the iPod software BEFORE plugging it into your PC. Really, you MUST do that or it will always show up as an "unrecognized" or "unknown" device.

First, if you didn't already have the iPod driver software, you can download the latest version from Apple's site-it's called the iPod Updater.

Now that the iPod is recognized, it MUST be formatted. This process is not like blanking out a hard drive; it's quick and painless. But it MUST be done before iTunes will put music on the iPod.

There really isn't a way for Windows yet. If your songs are on another PC you could make a PC network and send your songs over the network, if that is the way PCs work. I have done something like that with my PowerBook.

I didn't see anything about your already having songs on the iPod already.

New suggestion: EphPod. This utility does a lot of stuff, and it's Windows based. It works pretty well; I managed to recover my songs when my former primary music drive crapped out. Oh, and it's free, too.
