Hello and welcome, these are the type of movies your iPod Video can take:

H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats

MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats

Open them with QuickTime Player and get info ( press command+i ) command is the key with the Apple logo. A window'll appear showing you the kind of movie it is. You can get the info also inside iTunes with the same key combo (command+i) but the one gave by iTunes is more complete.

If it is not neither MPEG-4 nor H264 you can convert it with the Pro version of QuickTime, (you need to buy a license) or with a bunch of free apps available to download, some are free. Take a look at common download sites like www.macupdate.com and do a search for iPod video, well here is it:

Then there are another great apps not linstened in that search, like 'MPEG Streamclip' awesome app to deal with MPEGs files 'not iPod Video ready'.

There are some nice tutorials in the internet about how to convert videos and even DVDs to iPod format, to convert DVDs you only need the awesome Handbrake app and follow these instructions:

Then there is the www.ilounge.com site, with a huge number of resources and info about the iPod ecossytem.

Have fun!.
