The feedback I am getting from listeners to my own podcast is that many listen to it while commuting, the second largest group listens at work on their PC.

Maybe that's because 80% of podcast consumers don't have iPods. Free is always better than $300+.

There's nothing about a Podcast that dictates that it must be listened to on a portable device. It's really a misnomer.

The option to have it easily load to your mp3 player is the real advantage, but if not taken advantage of . . . podcast directory sites are just online stereos.
Check out www.podcastmayhem.com - I put a pretty good player and you can bookmark your favorite "stations" aka profiles as Favorites . . . what do you think?

Generally speaking, I don't have much time for podcasts. When I'm in the car I'm listening to Sirius, which has drastically reduced my iPod usage. Only if nothing appeals to me at a given moment on satellite will I put my iPod on, and then I'll usually listen to my music. I can see podcasting truly taking off if the average quality of content improves and if the delivery mechanism is made more enticing to potential listeners.

Yes!!!
I think in time though it will balance out. Mine was a Christmas Sirius purchase. The satellite is great through my whole-home sound system or in the car, but I still break out the iPod when out on foot or for doing yard work.
Of course, being a dad cuts down on iPod usage, as well. It takes two eyes, both hands and my ears to keep track of my two-year-old when he's outside with me. The kid loves to disappear.
