I know someone that just bought an iPod nano and I thought that it'd be nice to get them a stereo system to play it in.

Recently, I went to a Bose store to purchase a Bose Digital SoundDock, but they were out of them. They told me to come back the next week.

Then, I went to Apple.com and found the iPod Hi-Fi system:

http://www.apple.com/ipodhifi/

Does anyone here have the iPod Hi-Fi system? I've heard the Boss one, and it sounds real good, but I've never heard the iPod Hi-Fi one.

Does anyone know which one's better?

I do not own one, but have seen one in action. I personally would go with the Hi-Fi, I found it had deeper sound then the Boss system. And from my history of Boss, Boss Blows...

The only thing, how much does your boss system cost? I think the ipod hi-fi is about $350 which is more expensive than my ipod!

Oh.

But you're making about a hundred posts a day!

I wonder why you don't get around to actually READING the threads you reply to - like, all of the threads?

So I'm assuming you've heard both? How was the Bose, "total crap in comparison"?

I've only heard good things about Bose, most audiophiles I've met want their headphones.

The company's brand is very strong in the marketplace at large. A market study by independent analysts Forrester Research published in March 2006 reported that Bose's brand name was more highly regarded (by the US population) than any other consumer-electronics or computer brand name. Also, more US households (17.5 million by Forrester's estimate) aspired to own Bose products than the products of any other consumer-electronics or computer manufacturer -- Dell, Apple, Sony, Pioneer, TiVo, etc http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bose_Corporation

Anyone know who makes Apple's speakers? I'm assuming they had another company make them and put their brand on them as they aren't know for their sound systems, so I'm hesistant to buy them.

I work at a store that sells both, and we've had plenty of opportunity to compare (seeing as they're sitting right next to each other).

The SoundDock literally sounds like a cardboard box next to the iPod Hi-Fi.

Bose's reputation is entirely undeserved, except *possibly* in the case of their noise-cancelling headphones.

I have never heard a single piece of Bose equipment that was even remotely worth the money.

Thanks for your advice.

On a trip to the USA, I went to a mall that had both an Apple Store and Bose store. I ended up getting a Bose. Not for the difference in sound quality though. I couldn't really test the sound of the Apple Hi-Fi since so many people were in the Apple Store, so I just kept in mind that what you said was the Hi-Fi sounded better.

The problem was the Apple iPod Hi-Fi system looked too large and boxy. The Bose had a much slimmer, classier look to it.

That is a great idea. Buy your stereo equipment based on looks alone. I never thought of that. I wonder why I never thought of that? Oh yeah BECAUSE IT'S ABOUT THE STUPIDEST THING YOU CAN DO

Mac addicts used to buy their computer equipment based on looks. Not a big deal, and stereo equipment has never been Apple's forte anyways.

And it's a very nice house this systems going in. A big white box? Doesn't fit in.

Actually, I buy Macs because, for what I do, they're the vastly better system for the money, as do many others that you're misrepresenting.

The fact that they're sexy as hell matters, but is a fringe benefit, AFAIC.

Also, I don't think Apple has ever actually built any stereo equipment that they might have had their forte in until this boombox (I suppose the iPod could count theoretically, but you'll have a tough time arguing that it hasn't been one of their (wildly) successful products).

Either way: Enjoy your system.
