I have a 30GB video iPod and for some reason it wont charge when I have my laptop closed and asleep. It should still pull power from it. My 1st gen firewire iPod had no problems charging like that. Is this cause the new iPods connect with USB? It would be lame if I had to have my laptop running all night just to charge my iPod.

It may be due to the change in bus... with USB power is much more regulated (so the maximum can't be exceeded to prevent damaging the chips) than FW is (which will let just about anything happen, including frying the FW chips), which would explain why you can't charge with the computer asleep.

And when you put the computer goes to sleep its like shutting it off almost. Therefore your ipod wouldn't charge when your laptop is asleep. But one time I heard when the PB is asleep it still charges stuff and acts as if it is still on. I have an ibook so when my ipod is plugged in and I shut the lid, It will quit charging as a result.
