I just purchased my very first ipod the other day and there are some significant problems with it.
First of all, my computer has a USB 1.00 cable not a USB 2.00 which the nano supposedly needs.
I have an extremely hard time charging the battery for this thing. I left it charging for at least seven hours and the battery had only charged to half full. Out of that particular charge I got in maybe three or four hours listening time before my nano started crying and complaining that it was running low on juice. It eventually proclaimed that the battery was totally drained and shut down altogether. After that fiasco, this morning at six I set it to charge and it's been hooked up to my computer for five hours now and the battery meter is still low (red 1/3 strip).
Additionally, some of the songs that I transferred onto my nano show up as full tracks (the entire time span of the song appears) but when I select them to play, nano skips to the next track. Mind you these are all songs that have been imported from legitimately purchased CDs.
So far I'm really disappointed with my nano.
If anyone could help or give me some advice on how to resolve these problems I'd be very grateful.

USB 1.0 is no problem. File trasnsfers will just be painfully slow, that's all. But it does sound like your nano might have a charging problem.
Make sure it's plugged either directly into the computer itself, or plugged into a USB hub that has its own separate power supply. The nano charges through the USB bus, and if it's plugged into an unpowered USB hub that is also powering other devices it might not be getting enough juice.

Now for the help.
I don't think you can charge the Nano with USB 1. I think you can only transfer files over USB 1 (albeit VERY slowly) You need USB 2 to charge your Nano.
What software did you rip the MP3s with?

You can charge the nano via USB 1.0 with no problem. My wife has one, and she does it all the time.
you can also charge the nano via firewire, although you can't transfer files at all that way.

OK. I guess I was wrong. I will admit I don't own a Nano, I was just going by reports on Macintouch.com from when the Nano was introduced.

You can charge the nano with USB 1.0, but my sister (who has a nano and is using it with USB 1.0) has mentioned that sometimes her nano doesn't seem to charge properly using USB. So maybe there is an issue with at least some computers or setups.

USB Power adapter - $39 Canadian.
Would bypass any USB issues completely with charging.
As for the MP3's, you should use iTunes (you didn't say if you did or not). The track skipping happens to me on my 4G iPod sometimes, I put it down to a twitchy click wheel and get on with it, no big problem.
