My son's 20 gig iPod has decided to become tempermental.

Symptoms? 1) it refuses to upload his complete song library. It resides on our G4/733 which has been updated to OS 10.3.9. I have run the latest iPod restore for this model three times now. I have attempted to upload his library via the USB 1.1 connection, and the FireWire 400 connection. Via USB, the connection screws up around 250-260 songs (out of 665) into the upload. Using FireWire, I got up to song 513 before it crapped out. Checking all those songs, I find no corrupt files (that is, they play just fine on the desktop in Quicktime) at those positions, as was suggested by tech support and the Apple "genuis" at our local Apple store (of course, this supposed "genuis" also restored my son's iPod using the Windows version of the software, so I'm not sure if the appellation fits...)

What happens with it quits? well, iTunes (a) freezes at whatever song it was uploading (for instance, it stuck this morning at "song 513 of 665"); (b) won't eject, giving me the spinny beachball of boredom and death for an unlimited time; (c) freezes the system, so I can't even force-quit iTunes or restart the effing computer (luckily, the G4/733 has a force-restart button on the front-G5 designers take note!); (d) displays the "do not disconnect" screen on the iPod, or sometimes, the battery discharged screen; (e) iTunes gives me an error message that says "the information on "Max's iPod" cannot be read; run the iPod restorer."

Ya know, I've run the restorer 4 times now. That isn't the problem. Luckily we bought AppleCare for the unit, so the problem will be fixed one way or another.

But between this and the whole "authorized computer" thing, my opinion of iPods has really sunk. If I want problems, I'll go buy a cheap Dell and some off-brand MP3 player.

if your itunes software and ipod software are up to date, and you are crapping out and freezing while sync'n with firewire, then your ipod's drive is prolly toast
