For some reason, powerbook will not charge my ipod while it is sleeping. Instead of leaving the computer on for hours, I decided to use the airport express as a charger for the ipod. The only thing is, when I plug in ipod to the airport, it say's "Do Not Disconnect" and the HD spins like it does when you plug it into the powerbook to sync.
Is it ok to leave it charging while it says do not disconnect? Why is the airport mounting my ipod and what is it doing to it? All I want it to do is charge it and nothing esle. (Although it would be nice if Apple let us sync and use ipod HD wirelessly while it's plugged into the airport).

I don't think Apple intended you to use the base station to charge the iPod. In any case, it sounds like it's fooling the iPod into always being active, which can't be good for it over the long term. You might want to consider either buying an iPod AC adapter or a powered USB2 hub (they're useful anyway).

I know you can use the Airport Express to charge an iPod Shuffle with no issues, in fact I am sure I read an Apple KB article about it. Not sure about other iPods though, they may draw to much power and in your case keep spinning the HD.

Your PowerBook is not charging your iPod when it is asleep because, as per the definition of sleep, no power is being sent to the PowerBook's USB ports.
If you truly don't use your PowerBook for long enough periods of time to charge your iPod, then I would second the suggestion for the AC adapter or powered USB hub.

The shuffle doesn't have a hard disk or any moving parts inside, so I imagine that it wouldn't matter if you charged it with the AE.
