If an iPod winds up needing replacement, is is possible to pay the difference in price and get a newer version? Thanks!

Depends on if you bought it from Apple or a retailer, and if you got the retailer's warranty or applecare.

No, but if Apple replaces it between month 6 and 12 of your warranty, you have the privilege of shelling out a $30 "processing fee" or $59 for AppleCare. Your choice of fees simply to receive a replacement under your original warranty. Thanks Apple!
