"FROM Walkman to Talkman. Not content with changing the world's music-listening habits, Apple has come up with another innovation: the talking iPod.

A new generation of machines will use sophisticated software to convert the names of bands, albums and individual tracks into recognisable speech. "

Were the hell did they get this from?

Their collective butts?

Still, this is entirely doable. I believe there have been Japanese MD players with similar capabilities (although admittedly this is easier when you're dealing with the katakana because there aren't any variants in pronunciation).

Doable? Sure! Worth while? I think not. Isn't the idea of an iPod personal music that one enjoys privately while in public?

I think you misunderstood the point of the article, GH. It's saying that the host computer, using a presumably new version of iTunes, will process track names, albums and artists into speech to be downloaded to the iPod and played before each song is played. The primary reason given for the capability is to give users more control over the music they hear when they cannot look at the screen - such as when they're driving. It would also help shuffle owners, provided the feature is available on shuffles. I don't know if it's the huge innovation the article makes it out to be, but it could be of use to some. It's not about making your music collection public.

I did misunderstand. I can see this as a very important accessibility issue, but I still don't see it as a "mainstream" item. Drivers don't seem to care that they aren't concentrating on driving-particularly when they're on the road with me-and it seems like an extra setup step that a lot of people might try once in a while, but wind up not bothering with.

I had misread and thought that the iPod's speaker was going to be used to announce the names. That would be just plain rude as far as I'm concerned
