Fellow Members,

I have a two-year old Toshiba Satellite laptop on which I have iTunes for my personal 30GB iPod Video.

Scenario: My son has just bought his own 30GB iPod Video and wants to transfer a large chunk of my iPod music library onto his own new iPod.

Questions:

Since his new iPod has a different serial number to mine, can I simply upload my music library into his iPod? If so how?

Can I load two (or multiple) independent copies of iTunes onto my Toshiba laptop and
transfer music between the music libraries? If so how?

Is it possible to transfer my entire iTunes software and music library
from my Toshiba laptop onto my son's desktop PC? -if so, how?

I look forward to some great answers.

Regards,

Russ A.

For the first question, you can put your music library onto his iPod. When you connect his iPod to your laptop, open iTunes. iTunes will ask if you want to put your music on the iPod. Select yes or ok. Note though that this will erase all of his iPod's contents that are currently on it. As for the 2nd question, sorry I am not sure.

Thanks. However when I do this, will I lose my iTunes music library completely when it's copied to his iPod?

You can use any number of iPods with one computer, so it's no problem to use your son's iPod with your computer.

If you want to transfer your iTunes music to a different computer, you'll obviously need some way to transfer lots of files. This could be via an external hard disk, over a home network, or whatever. You just have to copy the files in the "My Documents -> My Music -> iTunes" folder. You can even use a third-party program to copy the files directly from an iPod to his computer, although I don't know if this would preserve all of the info in your iTunes library like playlists and play counts.
