Just a theory about the wireless option in the MS Zune.
I think Microsoft will use the wireless feature to create a “music” version of the mini networks that allow teenagers to send text files to nearby cell phones. This could be a very low power WiFi signal to preserve battery.
My guess is that when turned on, the Zune will broadcast the name of track you are listening to. The receiver will be able to tune in to hear the song, and then will have some options: 1. They can send you the equivalent of a smiley to indicate approval; 2. They can tag the song in their Zune so that when they next connect to the Zune music service it will be in their want list.
The system may have broader uses of sharing music, much the same way people do now with ipods and those headphone Y adapters. Thus you and your friends could listen to the same song while walking, cycling etc. It may even have a signaling system for people in auto caravans to indicate trouble. If it had a microphone sound input, this walkie-talkie function would be further enhanced.
Gyms might use it for aerobics classes.
I think that Microsoft needs to be “cool” and they sense that social interaction is a trend now (even though it’s past its peak). Also this sort of social meeting using a Zune is completely antithetical to the iPod listener’s state of mind which is to block out other people and noises and just be inside himself or herself.
I post this just as a thought. I’m curious to see what they really come up with.
