I have a 3G 20 GB iPod. After swapping in a Newer Technology battery replacement I once more plugged it into the Firewire port of my MacBook Pro via the appropriate cable. The Finder noticed that I was attaching an unformatted storage device and offered to do it for me. Instead, I launched Disk Utility and proceeded to do a zero-out format of the device. It didn't progress; all I heard was a once per 1.5 s click and finally an aborted format with an error saying something like "Input/Output error." I then switched it to my 733 MHz G4, also running Tiger, and now it formats just fine.
Strange, huh?
We'll see how it behaves after that. I started going through the rigamarole of reformmating the iPod, because it would consistently hang iTunes when I wanted to quit it, which also happens during restart.
