Nike+iPod troubles

So I bought the Nike+iPod system a few weeks ago, and I've been having trouble with it. I've got the sensor hacked into a pair of shoes using the Podophile method.
What happens is that I'll try to start my run and it'll say "please walk around to activate your sensor." I'll walk around, run around, jump up and down, shake my leg, but the sensor will not connect. Either it will eventually connect, or I'll take the sensor out, put it to sleep with the button, and then wake it up again. I'll stick it back under the laces, and set off on my run. What'll usually happen is that a few hundred yards later I'll realize that it's not connected anymore since the pace and distance run stop updating. I'll go through the whole process over again of power cycling the sensor.
I haven't heard of people having issues, so I don't even know what to do. I don't really want to go to the apple store, because I think they'll just tell me that I'm SOL for not using Nike shoes.
Any advice on what I can try?

You should bring your Sport Kit back to the Apple Store and just tell them that it keeps losing the connection. Don't mention your shoes... it's irrelevant anyway. There's no special antenna or anything else inside the Nike shoe that would improve the performance. I've read about other people having this problem, so you're not the only one. In fact, the second to last comment on the article you linked to describes a situation just like yours. He exchanged his Sport Kit and now everything is working fine.
Good luck.

I took the sensor into the apple store this morning, and they swapped it out for a new one.
i just got back from a calibration run (400 meters) and it seemed to be working better. After I calibrated it, I ran the 400 meters again and it seemed to be working alright. I'm going to go for a real run later. We'll see how that goes. So far, so good.

I am having a serious problem with the loudness on my iPod nano + nike kit. For some reason, ever since I've started using the two devices together, the loudness of my nano has been slightly reduced (and not by the volume limiter). Thus, I've had to turn up my music when I am running. However, the voice reminders of distance etc. are really loud!
Does anyone else have a problem with the loudness of the voice on their Nike + Ipod kit?

Did you try reseting your iPod? I bet that'll fix it.

gopod will fix your iPod Nano audio level.
I have my Nike+ sensor higher up on my shoe and it works fine. I cut a finger out of a glove and used a pin (like on a running number for a race = it's got a flat back).

Your sensor could have been in "sleep" mode. I think you press the button once on it and it wakes up.
