Making an iPod Disk Image?

Is it possible to make an iPod disk image... erase the iPod and then restore the disk image back onto it and have all your files and setting the way they were before the erase? In theory... this should work because I've done this on an OS X Hard Drive but, as for an iPod... I don't know if this has been done or not. Seems like it would work. Any thoughts?
