Is there a way to automatically back-up files to the iPod?

Right now my iPod's charging, but it doesn't appear on my desktop...anyone know why that is? I want to save some files to it for back-up but it doesn't show up as a drive.

Edit: now I found the "enable disk use" check box.

you have to enable disk use on it through your itunes pref while the ipod is plugged in

edit: whoopsie...answered before reading your edit.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)
