I recently reformatted my iPod on a PC to gain the cross-platform harddrive ability.

But after the reupdate, the iPod is several minutes about being recoignised on the Mac when I plug it in. It used to be a few seconds when it was HFS+ formatted.

Anyone else seeing this behavior?

I have an external 200gb hd with 2 hfs volumes and a fat32 volume. the fat32 volume doesnt show up on the desktop for about a minute after the 2 HFS volumes appear. probably a similar situation with your ipod. I don't know why it happens, but it does...

Strange, but it is definately the same issue. I've talked to some other persons, and they've told me that FAT32 is as quick for them, as HFS+ is (iPod mind you - not that it makes a big difference though).

Could anyone else with FAT32 HDD please tell us how fast they are to show up on the desktop?

In my experience all FAT32 drives take longer to show up when connected, as well as longer to read and write.

I started off with my nano formatted as FAT32 but the greatly increased transfer time wasn't worth the occasional access from a PC.

After I format mine to my school's HPs, it takes about 30 sec. for it to show up on my iMac. Not too long, IMHO.

how are you connecting it? USB1 or USB2 or Firewire?

I've never had a problem when connecting via Firewire with a FAT32'd iPod to my Mac
