would the 80gb be extremely thick? along the lines of the 60gb "ipod photo" a year or so ago.

It's exactly the same size as the 60GB model it replaced.

Interestingly, the 80GB drive in this iPod is a single platter drive. That means it's very thin. It also means they could introduce a 2 platter drive with 160GB capacity.

They probably used the extra space to put a bigger battery in.
