Ok so... I bought my 30gb ipod about 3 weeks ago with the educational-promotion but now they release a "new". Although it is new to the ipod line it is still a regular ipod video isn't it? I heard you can update the old ipod video's firmware, how would I go about doing this? Also, would the update make the screen have a brighter settiing as well?

My ipod's at version 1.1.2; what's the newest firmware for it?

Version 1.2.

I don't believe you get the brighter screen or the longer video battery life, but I know you get the games, the Letter while scrolling thing and everything else but the instant search.

I don't know for sure though.

If you want to upgrade your iPod's software, you need to download iTunes 7 first. Once iTunes 7 is installed, just plug in your iPod and a dialog box will pop up asking if you want to upgrade your firmware.

Version 1.2 allows your iPod to:
- Play movies encoded in 640x480
- Play downloaded games from iTunes Store
- Displays the letter as you scroll through a long list.

So basically we have everything the new iPods have except brighter screens, better battery life and instant search.

Slick shoes?!! Are you crazy?!!

and also adds the brightness function (although your brightness on the ipod itself is the same).

Does it add gapless playback? (By FAR the most important updated feature IMO)

Oh... yeah my itunes was version 6... I downloaded and installed the newest itunes now, and it tells me that my ipod is Windows formatted, thus I need a Windows computer for the update. Meanwhile, regarding iREZ's post... it adds the brightness function, but the ipod can't reach the "brighter" settings?

I do like how the new firmware now dims the ipod screen when docked instead of turning off the back light. I've had to turn on my room lights to tell if I've undocked it or not without have to make computer interaction, I can now tell just at a glance.

I'm running Firmware 1.1.1 on my 5G ipod. iTunes v. 7 says that my iPod is up to date and doesn't give me an option to upgrade to version 1.2 any ideas??
