Well after only about 2 years of solid use my Ipod photo died. battery was still in great shape screen and case are slightly scratched but all told nothing wrong with it... except that the harddrive refuses to work. I will hear it spin up and then a few clicks and nothing. I got attached to the little bugger but I am not sure it is worth trying to replace the HD. Well on to what my question was. Does anyone think it worth it for me to post this thing on craigslist or Ebay or is repairing it an option? I am completely comfortable tearing computers and the like apart and have done many a reapair on elctronics but are new HD's as much as a new Ipod? any help or guidance would be appreciated.
spence
Also I just read a post about running disk warrior. would that recognize the drive if it is clickety clacking? the Ipod updter is not recognizing it would Disk Warrior.

Hm.
I'm not sure what the prices on 40 GB drives of that size are, so I'm not sure whether it's worth repairing it or not. Since it's out of warranty, I wouldn't have any qualms about opening the sucker up and seeing what's going on. It might just be a cable that's loose... and if so, then you have yourself a working iPod again. Then again, maybe not.
It couldn't hurt.

If it's just the harddrive that's fried, then you could easily replace that (or even ugrade to a 60GB HD -- it will fit in your 40GB Photo, according to iFixit.com, which sells the drives for $149.95). If you can't find a replacement drive, go for a refurb, I guess.

I took a quickie look over at Ipodmods.com and they want $199 for the 40Gigger drive(bare). A possible alternative could be to buy one from Craigslist or eBay((shudder)) that has a broken screen or crapped out battery and scavenge the drive from it. As far as getting your ipod apart, It's really not that hard. Google around for "ipod batteries" or "replace ipod battery" and you get very easy directions on how to take them apart. I have had my 20G apart and also replaced a mini battery. you should have no problem.

That's what I thought happened to my 3G iPod. I couldn't restore it and I got the exclamation folder icon when I tried to turn on my ipod. Anyway I opened it up and hit the hard drive a couple times and guess what, it worked! This could work for you but YMMV.

Thanks for all the help. I think I am going to go with a new iPod video. it is not much more than a new HD.

Hi Velocity this could be a good solution I am sure you would have tried this out!
If you use an iPod with a Click Wheel (including iPod mini, iPod nano, iPod with color display, iPod photo, and Fifth Generation iPod) on a Windows-compatible computer, click here before continuing. If you're not sure what iPod model you have, click here.
Connect the iPod to your computer. If an alert message appears suggesting that your iPod needs to be either repaired or reformatted, you can click OK or Update to launch the iPod Updater application which you can use to restore the iPod. If this alert message does not appear when connecting the iPod to your computer, continue with the suggestions below.
Charge
The battery may be low. Charge the battery by connecting iPod to your computer using the cable that came with iPod, or by connecting to an Apple iPod Power Adapter. Verify that the iPod is receiving a charge by looking for a lighting bolt icon or charging animation.
Reset
The iPod may have locked up. Reset iPod.
Restore
Some iPod models require a specific or later version of iPod software. The iPod may have been partitioned or reformatted using an incompatible format. Restore the iPod using the latest version of the iPod Updater application. Tip: If the iPod Updater doesn't recognize the iPod, try forcing the iPod into disk mode and then try the restore again.

It's a good sign if you can get the iPod into Disk Mode.
Press the Menu and Select buttons simultaneously til you get the Apple logo, then smoothly shift to simultaneously pressing select and play.
You can then hook up to your computer and try a full restore.
Or even erase the drive and reformat.
You can access the iPod's built in diagnostics following the same broad approach, but shift from Menu/Select to the left hand <</select
