I have a pc at home, and an ibook at college. I also own a 400 gig external that I have at college. All of my music on my ipod is stored at home on my pc. What i'd like to do is rip my music from my ipod onto my external harddrive, and have itunes recognize the music on the external as my music. This way, i can have all of my music and listen through itunes, but not on my laptop's 30 gig internal hd. Then when i disconnect the hd, the music would be unavailable via itunes, and when the hd was connect, the music would be available.

Is this possible, and if so, how do I do this?

I assume by what you say that the music library that you sync with your iPod is on your PC at home.

If you just want to copy what's on your iPod to the external drive so you can listen to it at college, use one of the many 3rd party programs out there that lets you do that (there is some mention of this in the forum FAQ). Also see the thread below for some hints on how to manage music or videos on external drives;

What i'd like to do is rip my music to the harddrive, and then reformat my iPod for Mac instead of PC and then once this is done, have my itunes synced with my harddrive and ipod such that I can add new music to the ipod via adding new music to the harddrive.

Well i ripped all my music to my external hd, and I copied it all over into my itunes, and all the must was transfered onto my internal harddrive.

Is there any way that my itunes can access my music on the external harddrive, without having the music loaded on my internal harddrive? That is what i'm aiming to do here.

Let me elaborate: I want all the normal functionality of iTunes, but with the music stored on my external drive as opposed to the music stored on the internal drive. So this way, my internal drive is free of music and I can upload other new music onto the external.
