It really depends how you plan to use it. If you have a small music library, or want to use it a lot for running and workouts, the nano is the better choice. If you have a large library (that you want to take around), and are intrigued by video/movies/casual games for your iPod, go with the 5.5G iPod.

Are you a klutz? Do you tend to drop stuff? Get a nano.
Do you want it for running/mountain biking? Get a nano.

I think price is probably one of the most important factors to take into account. I'd love the video iPod but will have to save up a bit more. There's now a heck of a range of iPods available with the new '2nd Generation' Nano's and the 80Gb (!) video's. It's all a bit confusing really - if Apple called them different names, it'd all be much easier...

buy the iPod Nano first with at least 2GB-4GB. In another year you will want to upgrade and try video. The Nano lasts a long time on the batteries, the iPod Video will only last >3hrs playing video (double that with the screen brightness turned down).
Make sure you have USB 2.0
I think the new iPod Shuffle is too small. I liked the original iPod Shuffle.
The iPod Video will pay a few games now.
My iPods:
2 iPod Shuffles (1 broke, first iPod owned)
1 1GB iPod Nano (iPod I use the most, Nike+, 2GB would have been better)
1 30GB iPod Video 5G (only now started to use it (bought when they came out) due to the short battery life)
Get iTunes now, goto the iTunes Store and find some PodCasts (free) that you like.

Memory is never enough: The funny thing about iPods.
If you talk to someone with a 512MB Shuffle they will tell you to get the 1GB iPod Shuffle.
A 1GB Nano iPodder will tell you that 2GB is what you want.
A 2GB Nano person will say you should get 4GB Nano.
The 4GB Nano guy will say get the 8GB Nano or the 30GB iPod Video.

I can't tell you which is better for you, but I love having my whole music collection with me in the car. I never fumble around for cd's and there's no more "Oh man, I left that album at home".
I'm too indecisive to not have my whole collection with me. Maybe you're different.
