Right - enough of all this rubbish.

Lets get down to some nitty gritty. All videos purchased from the music store are now in at least 640 x 480 resolution (movies are in widescreen) encoded in h264 - bit rate has gone from 500 to around 1500 and the video size has approximately doubled.

What I want to know is does this mean that my 'old' 5G ipod can't play them - as the specifications are that it can only play videos up to 320 x 240 in h264?

Or is there going to be a software update to play them? And if so - I wonder if I will be able to use the 'search' functionality that the 'new' 5G ipods offer.... I hope so!!

The 640x480 movies/shows are using the baseline low-complexity H.264 profile, so they're easier to play back (but don't look as good) as the baseline profile would be. The iPod can play 640x480 baseline low-complexity profile @ 1.5Mbps or 320x240 baseline profile @ 0.5Mbps.

Are there any apps out there to convert our own content into the baseline low-complexity format? Handbrake only does baseline.

Well despite them being low complexity the videos look far better. Actually I just looked at an old Black Eyed Peas video I bought a while ago in 320 x 240 - that was low complexity as well?

noticed nobody posted any apps that do this, but I just released a new version of hawkeye that supports this new format direct conversion from DVD or files.

I've been using PQ DVD to iPod Video Suite for a while, it actually support converting your own content into the baseline low-complexity format of 640x480 H.264. Except that it is for PC only.
