Can the newest 80GB iPods be mounted on the desktop to act as an external HD so as to store normal data files? No mention of this feature on Apple's site.

If so, how fast is the USB vs the older Gen3 Firewire?

Thanks,

It would work fine as a HD. You might want to plug it into a high powered USB hub so the battery will stay charged.

Why do you want to use a 80 GB iPod a HD?

I'd like the feature of having an iPod but also need a nice way to store stuff. I do this with my 40GB FireWire iPod now but need more space.

How does the 80GB USB2 iPod stay charged? I have a MacBooKPro.. doesn't it work the same way as the Firewire one - if it is plugged into the computer, it stays charged. It says on Apple's site... "Charging via USB or FireWire to computer system or power adapter (sold separately)"

So can I hook it up via FireWire?

You can, I believe, charge it via firewire if you have the correct cable but you won't be able to access your music etc.. with the a firewire cable. You need the USB cable for that.

If your iPod is directly connected to your MBP (or any other Mac) and it is sleeping your iPod will not stay or charge. How long do you keep your MBP sleeping/shut off?

Correct.

It will charge via Firewire, meaning that you can use an older Firewire power supply, but it will only transfer data via USB.

But as long as the MBP is not sleeping, it will keep the pod charged same as the firewire, right?
