I have purchased a song from itunes (first time ever) for my son who has an mp3 player but not an ipod. The song is in MPEG-4 (protected). I sent it to his mp3 player but it will not play. Is there any way of converting it please? Very new to this game as you can see so please excuse lack of knowledge!

Burn it to CD. Reimport it to mp3. (Make sure you change the Import settings in the iTunes advanced preferences to import to mp3.)

That software is Windows-only, and a "free download!" that costs $29.90!?

I've burned the .m4p files to a CD. I've set iTunes preferences to convert to .mp3 when importing and set it to import when a CD is inserted. Insertion of CD produces nothing in iTunes, though the Finder sees it and its contents.
I'm using an eMac running OS X 10.4.8 and iTunes 6.0.5.

You need to burn to AUDIO CD.
Burning the protected m4p data files to a CD will do absolutely nothing.

I had burned it as an .mp3 CD with iTunes and as whatever the Finder does. Neither worked. Choosing Audio CD in iTunes did the trick!

Burning .mp3 CDs in iTunes produces a CD with the actual mp3 files on it, and if I'm not mistaken the protected songs just don't even get copied to that CD.

correct. Anything that isn't mp3 isn't even burned to the mp3 disk if you select that format

iTunes music is protected. You have to record it to unprotected mp3.
