When he plugs it into his PC it should reformat to PC. He may have to reformat it in iTunes 7 himself, I'm not exactly sure how the new one works. But you can't use a Mac to reformat an iPod to PC format. Silly PCs. Welcome to MacNN by the way!

The PC's iTunes should identify that the iPod is not in a format it recognizes and offer to reformat it. However, you can simply do a "restore" in YOUR iTunes to wipe it and put it back to factory conditions so your friend can start fresh. No sweat at all in either direction.
And as iMitchel says, WELCOME!

Hi,
Can you use a "PC formated" iPod with OSX?
Which format is better? PC or Mac format?
Thank you in advance for your answers

The PC format means two things: the hard drive is formatted with the FAT32 file system and that the iPod will only accept firmware updates from a Windows computer. Macs CAN see the iPod and update the music on it because Macs can read and write to the FAT32 file system. If you intend to keep music on both Windows computers and Macs, this is the format to choose because Windows computers CANNOT see or write to the HFS file system used on a Mac-formatted iPod.

I have no Windwos computers, just Macs and Linux. So, with a PC-formatted iPod, I cannot update my firmware ?!?!?!?!??
It sounds kinda wrong, as OSX can see FAT32 no problem :/

But the Mac iPod Updater WILL NOT work with a Windows-formatted iPod. That's that.
Restore the iPod and all will be well.

Use a network cable to transfer the music to your computer. Once you have done that, then told iTunes to add that music to your local iTunes library, then you can set up iTunes to only sync the music you want to your Nano. I have an 8GB Nano that I do that with all the time. But the trick is to move the music first, and that will take a network connection (unless you want to spend the week moving that much music, use a wired connection!) and a little time.
