Can I a Mac-synced iPod as an external harddisk for transferring files from a Mac to a PC?

If yes, where is it located once connected? Once hooked up, I get the "Do Not Disconnect" message on the iPod screen, but there is no iPod icon on the Windows desktop.

NO. If you have the iPod set up for Mac, its disk is formatted for HFS, the OS X file system. Windows CANNOT EVEN SEE THIS file system, so it cannot use the iPod as an external drive. And if you try poking around, you'll find that Windows thinks the iPod is an unformatted external drive and will offer to format it for you! RUN AWAY!!!!

Seriously, if you're going to use your iPod as a bridge between PCs and Macs, you need to have it formatted for Windows use, which will allow BOTH Macs and PCs to read and write it.

You mean I can do damage/screw up my iPod by connecting it to a PC?

Just as typoon says-if you connect your Mac-formatted iPod to a PC, iTunes will OFFER to "restore" it, which will reformat the drive and wipe out everything you have on it. This leaves you with a perfectly functional, Windows-formatted, EMPTY iPod. No damage, just a reformatted drive. Since I assumed you didn't want to dump all your songs, I added the humorous (I thought) "RUN AWAY." Sorry I scared you.

The correct answer is YES, You can. However, you need a program for windows that will allow it to read the HFS+ formatted iPod's files.

Try this program.

I did this once, but found that Windows couldn't properly eject the iPod (iPod always thought it was connected to the Windows machine).

Anybody sucessfully recovered data from an iPod that has been "restored" without having to spend hundreds of dollars sending it to a data recovery house?

I've had my iPod sitting in my desk for over a year now as I can't bring myself to give up on the 13GB of data I've "lost", nor can I bring myself to spend the money.

Thanks in advance.

incorrect.

You can use Xplay or Macdrive on windows, allowing the mac ipod to be right at home on windows.

I prefer this solution to using FAT on the ipod.

if it's a mac ipod, http://prosofteng.com has a data recovery software that should be able to undelete your files.
