My sister just got an iPod Shuffle for X-mas and needs to use it on a Beige G3 10.2.8, Radeon Mac:Edition 32MB DDR, 768MB RAM, 80GB HD, OrangeMicro USB2/FireWire PCI. It says 10.3.9 yet it can run on XP with older hardware. iTunes 6.0.4
She won't be getting a new computer so don't bother even saying so or upgrading the OS since 10.2.8 is the last supported OS on the Beige G3.
Would it at least charge if she can't update it on the Beige G3 via the USB 1.1?

The hardware doesn't matter.
You could have everything upgraded on your Beige G3 but if you do not have Mac OS X 10.4.8, Quicktime 7. and iTunes 4.6 installed the new iPod will not work. It needs the driver to recognize the device. You can try to use it for a storage device but I have had no luck on PC's or Mac's that were below the requirements.
I would not go out and buy a new computer. I would go and find a used Mac that can run the software needed for your new iPod Shuffle. Otherwise, sell the Shuffle and give her an old iPod.

She can't buy a new or used computer so that's out of the question. I heard people using the previous Shuffle run on 10.2.8. Would that iTunes looking app work that allows you to browse music on your iPod?
Also as for charging I realized that the Apple charger my mom has is just USB and am hoping (haven't tested yet) plugging in the iPod Shuffle dock will allow it to charge.

iTunes 6.0.4 on the windows side has nothing to do with the fact that itunes 6 won't run in X.2
You need a newer version of iTune and quicktime. And those require at least X.3
There is no way around it.
If you don't or can't upgrade the machine or the OS then downgrade the Shuffle to a 1G which is supported by X.2
If the USB ports on the machine provide enough power they should charge the Shuffle.

Use 10.3.9 with XPostFacto. There's no other way you can do it...

i recently bought a couple of ipod photos off ebay that can sync with firewire because i do not have a computer with usb 2.0. i have little use for them at present but i do not want to be in a postion someday of having to buy a new computer just to use an ipod. you have to be creative to continue using older machines. (or maybe i'm just foolish)

Last time I tried XPostFacto on there (04'?) It didn't go so well. Would be nice to try and get Panther on there, but how easy would it be. She is broke and even a used computer is out of the question, unless someone gives her an old PC.
I think the wall charger and using a friends Macbook might be the route for now.

That Shuffle has 3 times the value of the Beige G3 she's using.
Sell the beige toss in maybe $30 and you have the money for a B&W G3. Those run for about $50, can run X.3 with no problem and you can reuse all your upgrades from your beige. With people upgrading over the holidays there is going to be quite a few of them being put out to pasture so prices may even be lower.
If you are in North America or Western Europe there's no logic in spending $90 for an ipod to use on a $20 computer.

You are being very foolish.
USB 1 works just fine, although slower, for the new iPods that can't sync with firewire.
Instead of investing in better hardware you wasted money on iPods you confessed to having no use for, with used batteries which BTW lose charging ability sitting on the shelf. Worse yet for you the Apple Refurb Store was just selling those same models for under $120 with new batteries and warranties.
If you have a tower a $25 PCI USB2 card solves the new iPod problem. So the only machines that can't be upgraded are old old iBooks, iMacs, and eMacs which are quickly becoming impractical to keep fixing because soon the internal proprietary parts will exceed the value of the entire computer.
You put the cart before the horse by buying those iPods if you aren't putting them to use right now.

yo langdon! you're right, i do things ass backwards sometimes. i looked for a couple of months for the model i bought at the refurb site but they seemed to be all gone. i saw one yesterday for $199.00 and i paid a lot less apiece for them. i guess i just take pride in keeping older machines usable. i know that it doesn't make much sense. it doesn't stop with computers, i have an old house, like antique furniture, drive old cars and an older girlfriend. "putting the cart before the horse", that was a good one. i deserve everything you said. merry christmas everyone. let's go open some presents, maybe someone will give me another ipod.

My beige also has fundamental value/When she is done with it, I will use it as a command line only box to do something.
