Dying HD's will obviously not load and you can hear/feel a clicking sound come from the HD. Just run a diagnostic test.
And, REFURBS, they look brand spankin' new.

It's just the HD that they reuse. It's a whole new casing, screen, scroll wheel, etc. I have a refurb video iPod that I haven't had problems with (though to be fair, I don't use it a whole lot).

Well lately my if i dont use it for a day or so it will not turn right on. The little apple comes up and i have to wait for it to load up. When it turns on it says the battery is at 20% but then it just jumps back up if i turn it off and then back on again. I dont get it. Also it has crashed twice on me in the last 3 days.

That's pretty common actually. Think of it this way: when your iPod is off for a minute, or couple hours, it goes into a "sleep" mode not unlike that of your computer. When it's off for an extended period of time it fully shuts down to further conserve its battery. When you restart it, it does a full restart much like your computer - the delay you notice is the time it takes for the hard drive to spin up.
You might want to use the iPod update utility to clear it and reinstall its operating system if you're particularly worried about the crashes, but the slow start up is normal.

The iPod will look brand new. The packaging of a refurb, however, is not fancy retail packaging, it's a brown cardboard box. Probably fine for your use, but not so great if it's a gift.
