My 3G iPod 15GB got dropped over the summer off of a chair seat (2 ft?). It immediately starting giving me the folder warning and restatring. Here's what I tried:
- Restarting it (menu+play)
- Re-syncing it (won't show up in iTunes or the desktop
- Taking out the hard drive and shaking it (iPodLounge forums idea)
- Disk Utility won't see it
- I can force it into disk mode, but the apple logo just stays there and computer still doesn't recognize it.
- And finally, buying a new harddrive off of eBay.
I don't think the harddrive is the issue anymore. The new one and the old one sound the same when it starts up. The battery IS keeping a charge because I replaced it last year and it works off of the Firewire cable. About six seconds before the exclamation folder pops up, I hear the harddrive (both old and new) give a final *chunk* sound, like it's resetting the platter arm.
I definitely think it has something to do with the iPod recognizing the harddrive connection. I took the iPod completely apart and couldn't find any broken solder points between the dock, the hd cable or the circuit board.
It's a 3g that I've taken apart, brush finished the case, so I doubt Apple will take it back and repair it or replace it.
Anyone have any weird remedies or is it completely trashed from a 2ft drop?
