i have a 15 gig 3rd gen ipod, no video. i want to get a new video one. from what i was reading you can hook the video ipods up to the tv and watch a movie on the tv. how is the quality. i know it depends on the source. but if i were to rip a dvd to my ipod and watch it on the tv will it be grainy due to the compression?

nope. I found that the movies play better on the tv than on the iPod itself. The ipod just blows everything up to fit your tv screen. I also found that movies comverted on my pc where coming out grainy while watching full screen but this did not happen on my tv which islike 2 times the size of my computermoniter

FWIW, this is because TVs are extremely low-resolution compared to computer monitors, especially compared to the physical size of the screen. A 27" TV at 1024x768 is going to look a lot worse for computer images than a 17" LCD at 1024x768. Conversely, video is designed for lower-resolution, large displays. This is why playing DVDs on your computer never looks as good as playing them on a TV - even a standard-definition TV.
iPod videos have a resolution of 320x240, but I'm going to guess that imported videos are converted to 640x480 so they still look decent on a TV.

I have ripped DVDs with Handbrake to play on my 5G iPod 60gb. You will just have to tweak your settings to get what you want. It gets down to file size: bigger file, better quality, I even found that H.264 was only marginally better in file size, but maybe i wasn't doing it right.

I just got a refurb Fifth Gen 30Gb Video from the Apple site for $180. It's perfect. All I'm missing (I think) is the search function of the 5.5 gen models. Might be a firmware add-on, not sure. No shipping charge, but I did get hit for CA sales tax, so that was a wash.
Added a cheap Windows USB 2.0 PC Card for my aging Pismo. About $25. Hah... we've got the REAL "Plug-N-Play", no added drivers required!
Also just got a travel AC adapter and a nice DioSkinz silicone case from - Handheld Toys & Accessories
All of $9 incl. shipping with a first time "Google Check Out" $10 discount.
Now if only my Pismo wasn't too slow to convert movies.
