has anyone had this problem before? anyone know what I can do?

Unplug all USB peripherals. See here:

I was restoring w/ firewire would using usb work any better?

I use an iBook and have a 4th gen. ipod mini and had the same problem...about 2 months ago I had to replace my battery - it was the only link I could think of to this problem so I took apart the ipod again and unplugged/plugged in the battery and the next time I powered it on the error was gone.
