I'm selling my iBook G3, and saving the cash to spend on a Hard Drive Based Widescreen video iPod. When do you think these will be released? With the iPhone having a widescreen ipod factor in it, it's only natural that that's where they'll go with the ipod as well.
Thanks.

the new widescreen ipods will have a black, orange, and the standard color when they first come out. that's why the new shuffle colors have an orange, but not black color option. so yes, october will be a good time.

My totally baseless guess is that they will come out around the time the iPhone is released. That could be June-ish, or maybe earlier.

So, we're all in agreement that apple will released a hard drive based widescreen ipod? If anyone thinks otherwise, what are your reasonings?

No. Clearly it will not be widescreen, as the market for widescreen video players is a lot lower than that of full screen 1 Gb and under flash based players. My guess is that the iPod shuffle will be updated to include a screen and the nano and video will be killed.

i gotta concur with imitchellg5. so many people i have asked would actually prefer the regular sized screen ipods (on the video type) then a wide screen.

I can't believe you guys think they'll merge the video iPod w/ the shuffle!! There is a very fundamental difference: one is flash-based, while the other is hard-drive-based. Also, the shuffle is meant to be tiny, while people most definately will want a large video screen. Apple has bumped up its movie and television show collection BECAUSE it will soon offer a better screen on which for us to view that media.
This leads me to conclude that you guys are trolls.

If anyone from inside apple is reading this, mark my words. There had BETTER be a Hard drive based widescreen iPod coming SOON!
Why does apple always have to wait so long with everything???

I don't think they'll announce or release anything before the iPhone has been on the market for a few months. I don't think they want to take sales away from the iPhone as it ships.
I can't believe that the next step for the full size iPod isn't going to be the music and video part of the iPhone.
I think around the end of the year. . . and I'll buy one the day it comes out

It depends on whether they consider the iPhone a different market from the iPod. If they do, then don't expect anything released until well after iPhone, except for enhancements to the current models.

Now i'm getting really impatient. Seriously. Can you imagine how cool it would be to have like 50 movies on a little device with a 3.5" or 4" widescreen display? Lord of the Rings! Gladiator! The Godfather! Star Wars! King Kong! Braveheart! Passion of the Christ!
Anywhere you are!!
It's gonna be the best thing since the mouse!

solid state storage isn't that far off. i can't remember where i read it, but someone said apple is scrapping development for future hard drive based ipods in favor of solid state. hooray for the rumor mill. and i can't imagine that the next generation wouldn't incorporate a wide screen. i mean that would make about as much sense as coming out with something called apple tv with no way to input a cable or satellite signal... oh wait.

I doubt it.
The price of solid state storage has to come WAY down for large capacity flash memory to replace hard drives.
Will it happen? Eventually, but probably not for a couple more years.

eBay: Cheap Apple iBook 600Mhz PowerPC G3 #134 (item 260085219507 end time Feb-14-07 07:56:34 PST)
$87 on eBay_
On a Side Note -
If Apple's iPhone has a 3.5 inch diagonal viewable screen_
And it has all of the features of the current iPod built in_
Which by default means that it plays "videos"_
Why not think of the new product as an iPod with a built in phone_
iPod + Phone = iPhone_
The phone [ironically] is one of the smaller features of the forth coming Apple product_

Hey guys first time posting here and uh... i wrote this up and later noticed how long it was... not gonna bother editing but these are my views and like i said new to the site... this thread actually made me just register and well i had something to say... great site and look forward to posting more... btw... how do u quote somebody i cant figure that out...
apple tv, new wireless router, leoperd... all these things seem pretty consuming for the company and well we're almost in march already and ive read there's a special event coming up soon for announcements to be made but include production and launch of iphone in june and i say they are up to their neck. Summer seems like a great time to launch the iphone and let it soak up attention (considering its a big "industry chaging" product) for quite a few months not wanting anything to take away from that. Launching a widescreen ipod BEFORE the iphone which would more than likely need touch controls (i dont think they liked the whole zune layout very much) and a new interface for touch controls that can take care of music photos and video... well... thats pretty much the coolest part of the iphone (since everyone pretty much downplays and criticizes the phone part). So before isn't smart, summer is all about the iphone, well that leaves the end of the year event apple has where they like to unveil very new and important hardware like apple tv. ipods are fine for now and they seem to be emphasizing on "the most popular" and "most wearable" mp3 players (nano and shuffle) I read somewhere that ipods cost much much less to make than what they sell them for meaning they are focusing on profit right now since they have the higher market share, later on in the year with other companies rolling out new products and things into full swing they may take a more competitive approach. whats better than a price drop on the lower two and then changing up the bigger ipods like they did 2 years ago.. anyone remember at what point in the year they released the first nano's and video ipod and later the shuffle? dont quote me but i believe it was in the fall quarter of the year. As for the hard drive solution i read something about samsung having this new flash memory which "might end up in apple ipods" that supposively had high capacity in small size... wouldnt a 16gb and 32gb flash based widescreen touch controlled ipod solve the battery drainage problem? the thickness of the ipod problem? it would keep in tune with the 30gb file size and offer a more affordable solution with double the memory of largest nano... so less battery hogging by the hard drive... bluetooth maybe? faster than zune's sharing i suppose? doesnt need the phone part... (thats the iphone) or internet connectivity (iphone) or to contain all those features crowding the ipod which are in turn taking away from the simplistic nature that made the ipod famous in the first place (or let touch controls solve it who knows) creating iphone over there being a merged ipod and phone doing its thing... ipod over here being an... ipod. Keeps it simple and takes it to a whole other generation... (and kills any hope the zune had of becoming a competitor (since it gained spot no. 2 it "is" ipods biggest threat lol) )

When I bought the first nano a friend asked me: "...nice, but you cannot call with it?..."
I said no, as that isn't why I have iPods, I have a phone for it.
And of course we already had this http://www.msu.edu/~luckie/gallery/marco.htm in 1995!
Imho, an iPhone isn't an iPod. It's good if you want just some music with you, but my 60 GB iPod is full already, and even an 80 GB wouldn't fulfill my needs; preferably I would like to have a 120-160 GB, without big scratch-screen™ but just heavy bulk capacity to load my music for a couple of weeks. Or instead give me a possibility to connect a (relatively cheap) external harddisk to it where I can put my iTunes library on it.
Bigger iPods are coming.
Bigger screens are coming.
Solid state iPods with more capacity are coming.
Everything eventually will come.
Bear in mind however that we cannot expect 120 GB flash for an affordable price tag within a year, it simply isn't there yet. It will come though.

This is the point. The product I *really* want it the new iPhone where the phone part is replaced by a 80GB disk. I originally thought this was so bloody obvious, and that it would appear before the iPhone itselt in fact, but now suspect Apple will delay, to avoid taking sales (and hype) away from the iPhone. Sigh.

I fully expect that the widescreen/touch-screen form factor is the new way Apple is going for their flagship iPod.
However, i don't expect we'll see it until at least a couple of months after the iPhone hits the street. Why? Because Apple wants to capture as much of the technophile/early adopter market as possible, and you can't do that as easily when there's an easy "downsell" option. People who want all the functionality but not the phone may just buy the iPhone at first, if there's no other option.
Once the initial iPhone rush subsides, THEN Apple will roll out the touch-screen iPod.

Apple will not release a new widescreen iPod until after the iPhone is available. I know they are different markets, but the sell-through strategy is that they want to sell masses of their newest products...
Then people will be crying out for more capacity, and there will be others who do not want phone capability, it is only then that Apple will release a new iPod, back with the 30GB, 80GB storage. This will most likely lead to a lot of users owning an iPhone and a widescreen iPod.

I agree that it will be a couple months after the iPhone. I'd pay $350+ the day they come out for a widescreen iPod that will have a big hard drive, wireless web and e-mail, etc. without the phone.
The current form factor of the iPod Video could still be popular model if they drop the price of it.
I just hope they don't handicap the new widescreen iPod by leaving out wireless internet or something. I could see them doing something like that to keep the iPhone more feature-rich.

How long does apple tend to keep the models around? I mean i started using ipod with the black 30gb video one but can someone say the time-span between the 20gb photo and the 20gb color? then the change to video? if these were year to year changes... then this ipod has been goin on for two years this year... because they released it in 2005 and then refreshed in 2006... so the model is already becoming old..
but then again what if they wanted to push the iphone and considering the fact that this ipod model has been successful maybe another refresh is under way? how about an FM radio built in for once or bluetooth so u can use things like isync or ipod to ipod connectivity, what if ur iphone could access ur ipod with bluetooth for file transfer? More likely more game support for current ipod model since they have invested time and money into starting an entire game section on itunes and the rumored hiring of game developers... and games need the click wheel, thats how the games at hand are designed for so maybe just a click wheel improvement along with longer battery life.

Just putting this out there:
Apple always announces iPods in September...with the nano and the 5g iPod it was something like the first Tuesday in Sept for the nano (1gen) and then the 3rd Tuesday for the 5gen 30/60 gig iPods. I predict they will go with this timeframe again, giving the iPhone several month's lead and being an ideal opening for the holidays...and I'm gonna buy some apple stock a couple weeks before the announcement cause this baby's gonna be a huge seller! Anybody have any pricepoint ideas? I bet it will be like when the color screen 4gen came out and cost around $450-$550, can't remember exactly...what do you all think?

Apple does not always announce iPods in September. The original was November. Nanos and 5Gs have been the only ones. The last updates were not in September as well. And the original 4G color iPod was $399.

My hopes is that its not a touch screen. There are many times I adjust the volume and skip tracks while the ipod is in my pocket. I would hate to take it out every time I want to do a simple task as that. However if they include a remote control... then I wouldn't mind being a touch screen.
