Okay this is probably really dumb, but I've had an ipod for about 2 years now and everytime I sync it (on my mac) I get a message asking me if I want to upgrade to whatever the latest ipod software is, also everytime I open itunes get asked similar question, e.g. do you want to upgrade to latest itunes.
So far I have been too scared to upgrade either the ipod or itunes software, the reason why is because I use my ipod as a hard drive (as well as for music) between my mac and other people's pcs. So initially when I bought it I hooked it up to friend's pc and enabled it for hard drive use (or whatever it's called), and so that it would be pc formatted, and since then I can use it as a hard drive on both macs and pcs, but I'm worried if I upgrade the software either on ipod or my itunes on my mac that it will then only be mac formatted and not work as a hard drive on a pc. Can anyone tell me if I am safe to upgrade my ipod and itunes software, if I do this on my mac will ipod still work as a hard drive on mac and pc?

don't you have a box you can check to get rid of these messages? if your ipod works fine now, why upgrade? some people don't like itunes 7.

Yeah I have an option to say no, which I always do, but just wondered what would happen if I say yes.
I am happy with my latest software but for all I know there might be some cool new features with the latest ipod software upgrade, but I have no way of knowing this.
In general I've noticed since mac os x started that I get messages at least once a month asking me if I want to upgrade (free of course) to the latest software etc for all sorts of software, e.g. mac software, microsoft software etc, sometimes I say yes, sometimes no, I have no idea why though I constantly get all these software updates, not sure what the advantage of getting the latest software upgrade is.

No, it won't become Mac-formatted. When I switched from PC to Mac, my iPod stayed PC-formatted, even when I did software updates.
