They are just riding the iPhone media hype. From what I have seen, the iPhone's dock connector is no different from any other iPod's, and several cars now have such integration. Couple that with the now ubiquitous BlueTooth support in high end autos, and you have absolutely nothing new, other than BMW's press release.

I have the iPod kit in my 2006 3 series, and my Samsung A900 works fine with the BT integration. I'm not sure why they even put a press release out, nothing too new or revolutionary to report. The only thing i can think of is that BMW wants on the hype train that will be the iPhone.
