I just purchased my first MacBook with a built in iSight. Now I'd like to set up my Mac Pro with a web cam to use iChat when I'm on the road to video conference with my kids. I found out that Apple discontinued the iSight. Are there any other alternatives out there? I can't believe they discontinued it without a replacement or other option.

Any USB UVC certified camera should work with Mac OS X 10.4.9 (Note that it ONLY works with 4.9, not 4.8 or anything earlier)

Those kind of cameras run about $60 and up from people such as Creative and Logitech.

But yes, I agree that the discontinued iSight blows.

Well, my cheapo $50 web cam doesn't work. How can I tell if it is UVC? I suppose I can gather that it is not since it doesn't work.

Have you tried macam? Check the list of supported cameras and then give it a shot.

Every camera labeled "Vista Certiffied" is required to be a UVC camera. Some people have said they've found cameras that advertise this yet are not, so, buyer beware.
