What can I use to separate the audio from a ripped DVD, which I can then import into iTunes an onto my iPod?

I've read the threads on how to rip a DVD to a video iPod. I've tried out a couple solutions (Handbrake, VLC), but neither does that last step I want - get me the audio ONLY.

I just bought an audio DVD. When played in DVD Player, it displays a screen with the song lyrics, and plays the music in 5.1 or high-quality stereo, your choice. I don't care about the lyrics; I want the music on my iPod. VLC seemed to let me do it, as I got an audio only MPG file, but I couldn't get it into iTunes or to the iPod. In fact, the file output only plays on VLC. Handbrake looks like it will let me extract the individual songs, but in a video format.

Any suggestions?

Use VLC's wizard to transcode it to AAC in an m4a container.

This is how I do it:

Use Mactheripper and use the demux streams option and select only the audio tracks you want. Then I use mAC3dec to convert the AC3 to MP3 format.

You can rip the DVD to your Mac using Mactheripper and then open the files in QuickTime Pro if you have it and just choose "Export movie to audio."

Thanks, all. The MacTheRipper + mAC3dec combo works. Now, I have another question. The DVD has two versions of the album - one in stereo and one in 5.1 surround sound. I can't determine from MacTheRipper which version I'm ripping, but one of them mAC3dec can deal with, the other not. Any ideas?
