Look, I know this is a dumb question, so no bashing.

In all the Internet articles, forum flame-fests and other assorted iPhone-related chatter over the past 48 hours, no mention has been made (that I can find) over the most visually obvious iPhone change between the initial announcement and this week's new commercials. That is the home screen wallpaper.

All iPhone images and marketing material so far showed the "Nemo fish" background. The three commercials that debuted on Sunday have a simpler, IMO less attractive, flower background.

All good marketing is deliberate. Apple sets the bar for product marketing. So anyone care to speculate on Apple's deliberate reason for making this change?

Less visually distracting? Using a flower image to appeal to women instead of geeks?

Your thoughts!?

It was beginning to look cliché. Even all the Chinese-iPhone-copycats were using the clown fish background. As a brand for Apple, you don't want the fish to be the brand, you want the phone to be the brand.

I agree, I think it was because of the amount of copy-cat phones that arose during these 5 months of waiting. Also, I think that the new image is less cluttered than the old fish one. And when you're showing functionality and such, you want to be able to see whats going on in the interface and not be distracted by the background image.

Personally I like the new image. The colors work better with the color of the phone itself.

I found it more interesting that they called it the Windows term of "Wallpaper" over desktop picture.

Well, that's probably because the iPhone doesn't have a Desktop. The iPhone has a completely new UI paradigm that doesn't use the desktop metaphor (desktop, files, folders, etc), so you wouldn't want to call it that just because the Mac calls it that. The closest and most familiar alternative that doesn't invoke that metaphor is thus "wallpaper."
