Probably not right away, but since Youtube is converting their stuff to h.264 (partially for Apple TV) I'd say it's certainly a possibility that it could work in the future.

Exactly. They can't air TV spots touting the real Internet and promising things won't be "watered down," then have one of the Internet's most popular sites not work. YouTube better work*... And right out of the box, too.
*"Better work..." Or what? Like I'm not still getting one at 10 a.m. on June 29th.

The answer is...
I think they originally said there would NOT be flash available on the iPhone. YouTube videos are based on flash technology (I think?). Flash video or something another... anyway...
Real internet is one thing. Plug-ins are another.

Since YouTube is going to be available on iTunes, I'd say the iPhone will be able to play them.

They are re-encoding YouTube videos in H.264 format (just because Steve asked them to. )

The iPhone v1 will not support FLV format, but it does support h264/mp4.
If they are encoding youtube video to h264, so I think iPhone will support Youtube in the near future.

The other question we have to ask is whether EDGE will be fast enough to stream Youtube videos or if you could only realistically view them with a wi-fi connection.

Which brings up an interesting point. If ApplePhone is running OS/X and has the actual apps, how can these be upgraded (i.e. System Updates, plug-in installations) or is it a closed architecture?
On another note, what about user installable-apps like Word, iWorks? If it has to be connected to a Mac to sync through iTunes, can ApplePhone be mounted just like an external drive and thus allow for the installation of new software from the Mac it's connected to?

I would expect it to work, but that "plugin loophole" tells me otherwise.
So this leads me to a larger question - what about plugins for sites that require Realplayer, wmp or anything not Quicktime?
I hope developers are working on this kind of stuff.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that they are working on it. Gotta keep in mind that this is the very first edition of the iPhone. There will be many more to come, and they will have many more features. I think Apple wants this thing to evolve into the ultra mobile computing/communications device. I have total faith that they will eventually answer all concerns regarding version 1.0 and most likely give us stuff we haven't even thought about yet.
But even though this is the first version, I'm most likely getting one because it pretty much has all I need at the moment. I'm sure my needs will grow over time and my hope is the iPhone grows with them.
