Here is a question fro you guys. You may not even know the answer, but here goes.
If I have a plan now, and on the 29th when the iPhone comes out, want to upgrade, will I pay fees to upgrade my plan, will I pay more for an iPhone without a new contract or will it be one price everywhere, ie: the apple store?
Second, will I be able to walk into the apple store, buy one, and take it to the Cingular store to be activated?

No one knows for sure, but there is speculation. One thing we do know is that the cost of the phone is the same whether you are starting a new contract or upgrading your current phone/contract.
If you are not under a Cingular contract you will be entering a 2 year commitment to Cingular.
If you are currently under a Cingular contract, if you get an iPhone you will extend your contract an additional 2 years (e.g., if you have a year left, you will have 3 years left; if you have 3 months left, you will have 2 years and 3 months left).
If you buy at an Apple Store, no one knows how the activation will work. It's likely that you will be able to somehow activate your service/iPhone through iTunes. I doubt they will handle that at the Apple Store. Not sure whether you can buy it at an Apple Store and take it to a Cingular Store to activate although I don't see why you couldn't.

There is some concern that you may not be able to transfer your number at an Apple store.

All I am concerned about is the fees Cingular may try to charge me for being an existing customer and trying to upgrade to an iPhone and the related plans. Extending the contract period is not a big deal, I am happy with my service at the moment.
If I can buy it at an Apple store and take it to a Cingular store for activation, that would be perfect.

I don't know about Cigular/ATT, but with Verizon all they care about it that what you do extends your contract. They're not going to charge you fees to do that.
